Director VI Anand previously made Ekkadiki Pothavu Chinnavada and Okka Kshanam, both sci-fi films. This is Ravi Teja's first full science fiction experiment.

Story - What Happens in That Blue Tube

The film starts in Delhi. Vasu, played by Ravi Teja, a simple family man, is attacked and killed in Ladakh and his body is frozen in snow for years.

Years later, a group of scientists from Re-Live Biolab find his frozen body. Their head Dr. Shishir Sharma wants to create history by beating death. He brings the body to his lab. He is taken to the Re-Live lab where Dr. Shishir introduces a technology that can revive dead people.

In the lab, his team includes Dr. Parineeti played by Tanya Hope. The team successfully revives Vasu, but he wakes up with no memory. The chief scientist warns his team to treat him only as a lab rat and not trigger his memory.

But science fiction never stays in the lab. When Vasu goes out, he starts getting flashes of his past life as Disco Raja, a 1980s disco dancer from Madras who was also a dreaded gangster. His biggest enemy was Burma Sethu who suffers from PTSD. When Sethu also comes to the same lab for treatment, the past and present collide.

The second half is full of Ravi Teja's trademark comedy, action and flashback revenge drama.

Review - Is It Worth Watching

Positives:

  1. Ravi Teja's Energy: Even at 52, he pulls off both Disco Raja 80s look and modern Vasu.
  2. Unique Concept: First time a mass Maharaja film tried cryogenic revival concept in Telugu.
  3. Tanya Hope as Scientist: She is not just glamour, she is shown as a real scientist who questions the ethics of the experiment.
  4. Music: Thaman's BGM in lab scenes is very good.

Negatives:
The film received mixed reviews because after a promising sci-fi start, it becomes a routine gangster revenge story. The overdose of retro disco comedy in second half breaks the sci-fi thrill.

Overall, for Hindi dubbed audience who love South sci-fi action like I Robot or 7 Aum Arivu, Disco Raja is a decent one time watch. Especially the Re-Live lab portions are very well shot.
